Church of the Japanese Martyrs Cemetery Profile: the Clancys

I had it brought to my attention that there is another mention of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs Cemetery online, in relation to the geneology of the Clancy family, originally from Cork, Ireland.

From a Geneology.com forum:

Limited family information tells us that Denis was born in County Cork, Ireland possibly in the town of Skibereen. Based on the information on his tombstone, and information found in the Ontario census records, he was born in 1817. He appears to have migrated to Canada with his wife, Johanna Casey. Information found in the National Library in Dublin indicates that Denis and Johanna’s eldest son, Michael, was baptized in County Cork in 1841. The family lore was that Michael was born at sea, but more likely he was very newly born before they started the migration.

Another bit of family lore was that Denis’ son Denis was born in Troy, New York, which is on the eastern end of the old Erie Canal. Yet the younger Denis’ baptismal record can be found in Port Robinson, Ontario. There is a possibility that Denis and Johanna came with other McCarths from County Cork to find work on the Erie Canal, and eventually found their way to Ontario where many from Cork and Kerry went to work on the Welland Canal. Local history in Welland, Ontario says a lot about the Corkmen and the Kerrymen who were canal workers. Denis and Johanna migrated from one of the most devastated areas of the Great Famine in Ireland.

Denis and Johanna are buried along with their son, Patrick who died at about age 21, and with their daughter Mary Ann Clancy and her husband, Denis Clancy. The cemetery is on land that once was the site of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs located on W Church St. in Welland, Ontario.
